Why Should You Care About the Well-Being of Your Employees?

We are seeing a massive shift in the current global workforce. Productivity, morale and engagement are down, and people are leaving their jobs at a higher rate than ever before.

The pandemic has had some unexpected side effects; a recent study found that 73% of workers are actively thinking about quitting their jobs, and millions have already done so last year alone. On top of that parents, especially mothers, are leaving the workforce at a much higher rate.

But do the problems we are seeing in the workforce stretch much further than we think?

What is going on behind closed doors?

The last few years have taken a toll on all of us. Burnout, depression and suicide rates are the highest they have been in decades. And companies can no longer ignore the well-being of their staff if they want to retain their talent.

With almost three-quarters of the workforce considering leaving, it is important to understand what is going on behind closed doors.

Research confirms that huge numbers of workers are unhappy with the current situation and these shocking numbers don’t lie:

  • 54 % feel overworked
  • 39 % feel exhausted
  • 20 % say their employer doesn’t care about their work-life balance

Every year we spend billions on health-related absence costs

The healthcare costs of job-related burnout are currently guesstimated between $125-$190 billion in the US and £45 billion in the UK per year.

This is a rise of 16 % since 2016 — an extra 6 billion a year. On top of that, the average turnover costs companies 33% of the employee’s salary. That is about £1666 per employee per year!

Every year we flush money down the drain to cover these costs whilst there are preventative programmes and initiatives that could be introduced to significantly reduce these expenses.

What can we do to change?

When company culture, morale and engagement is down, employees will leave and expenses increase. If the problem is not fixed, it creates an expensive cycle that is unnecessary.

“How we define success as a culture has led to many struggling with guilt, anxiety, stress, burnout or worse… Is the way we define success ready for a drastic upgrade? With suicide still being the #1 cause of death for males in the UK (age 21–45), I believe it is time to open up the dialogue about the importance of (mental) health for the business, the people and the bottom line!” Susanne Grant

For many of us, just earning a paycheck and working hard isn’t enough to feel satisfied in a job anymore. Employees are looking for new groundbreaking ways forward that will support their work-life balance and wellbeing.

If you care about the business and the bottom line, it is important you act now, because it is an expensive “joke” not to care about the well-being of your employees.

Look at the data

At Grant Method, we propose a 5-phased approach to help your employees to be healthier, happier & more efficient as it is the way to drive better results & cut costs.

  1. The first phase is focused on inspecting the existing processes to avoid stress-related absence and turnover costs. This can be done via a survey or viewing other data like exit interviews etc.
  2. In phase 2, we establish the status quo including the collected data from phase 1.
  3. After phases 1 & 2, we will create a new success strategy that is in line with the company goals.
  4. Before moving forward to implement these new changes, we make sure the leadership team receives the support to be able to implement these changes easily.
  5. Once we move into the final phase, the leadership team will receive continuous support to implement their unique Success Framework effectively.

Conclusion

If we want to lead our team into the future we have to make mental health, well-being and work-life balance part of the quarterly and yearly objectives.

Because when we put people before profit, and family first, things don’t fall apart, things will fall together.

It’s time to normalise life beyond the desk.

About FEM

FEM stands for Feminist Entrepreneurs Magazine (or Finally Eradicating Misogyny, if you’re feeling cheeky), and is a House of Hives publication. We started this magazine to support entrepreneurs who feel disenchanted with the 24/7 hustle culture, the competitive narrative of toxic masculinity and narrow definitions of success, value and wealth that it peddles. We want to talk about balance, the importance of mental health, the power of collaboration and diversity, and much more.

We hope to inspire and support entrepreneurs as they build their businesses in enjoyable and sustainable ways, by sharing stories and tips from thought-leaders and change-makers. Join the mailing list to have the FEM e-magazine sent directly to your inbox.
